Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where do you get your curriculum/materials?
There are numerous websites and stores where you can purchase textbooks, workbooks, and a wide variety of resources so you can build a customized curriculum for your child(ren) that aligns with your local laws.
  • How will my child learn to socialize and get along with others?
There are many opportunities for children to socialize with their peers outside of a traditional school environment: community groups; recreation programs; church clubs such as Adventurers, Pathfinders, and choirs; community service organizations; meetups with other homeschooling families... the list is endless!
  • How do I start homeschooling?
Pray about it. Ask God for guidance and direction as you move forward. Contact your local school board/district authorities. You may need to fill out a form or provide a homeschooling plan. Research the rules before you begin. Choose your curriculum and other resources. Homeschooling can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. Research and select resources that fit your budget, and that suit your child(ren)'s needs. Start teaching! It may feel overwhelming at first, but the beauty of homeschooling is that you can go at your own pace. Enjoy the process and learn as you go.
  • How can I possibly homeschool when I work full time outside of my home?
Homeschooling doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing deal. Some parents choose to homeschool from kindergarten right up to university. Others homeschool only for elementary school, or only during the kindergarten years. Even if your child attends conventional school full-time, there are still ways to expand his or her learning opportunities at home on weekends or on holidays, in fun and engaging ways. Homeschool is for everyone!
  • I work from home/in the home but I'm not sure I really want to homeschool full-time. Are there any other options?
Contact your local Adventist school and ask if they can accommodate your child(ren) on a part-time basis. Many of them are more than willing to accept children for one or two subjects, and offer tuition on a per-subject basis. This can be a great option if your funds are limited, you don't have the knowledge, confidence or time to teach certain subjects, or if you just need to get your kids out of the house a few times a week!
  • What are the benefits of homeschool?
There are several reasons why homeschooling is beneficial for children and their families. Here are just a few: Personalized learning - Homeschool gives you the freedom to customize the curriculum to your children's talents, interests and abilities. Day school generally tends to offer a one size fits all approach, whereas with homeschool you can go at your child’s pace. If your child needs to spend more time on a specific subject or topic you have the ability to go back and review the content until he or she understands it more fully. Conversely, if your child grasps a concept quickly and is ready to move beyond his/her grade level, you can easily do that too. Boosts confidence - If your child really struggles with certain subjects but excels at others, you can structure their learning accordingly, which helps them build confidence in their abilities. Flexibility - Sometimes life happens, and when it does, you can alter your homeschooling schedule to fit your family's circumstances. Plus, an added bonus is that you can go on holidays off-season when attractions are quieter, have more fun and save some money!
